Crayons, Markers or Colored Pencils? What Works Best for Ages 4 to 8

For ages four to five, chunky crayons and washable markers are the easiest to use. Colored pencils work better from about six or seven, once a child has more control over pressure. Most families end up with a box of each.

Each one behaves a little differently on the page, so here is what to expect.

Crayons: the easy start

Chunky crayons are sturdy, forgiving and hard to snap. They need a firm press, which is good practice for small hands, and they never soak through the paper.

The color is softer than markers, so pictures look gentle rather than bright. Triangular crayons roll less and are easier to grip.

Markers: bright and quick

Markers give strong color with almost no pressure, so a child sees results fast. That makes them a favorite. Choose washable ones for clothes, tables and walls.

Markers can soak through paper. Slide a sheet of card or a spare piece of paper behind the page you are coloring, and the picture underneath stays clean.

Colored pencils: for more control

Pencils let older kids shade, layer and color neatly up to a line. They suit sevens and eights who like detail. For younger children they can feel like hard work, because the color is light unless you press hard.

Thick, soft-core pencils are easier than thin ones and break less.

A simple starter kit

A box of chunky crayons, a set of washable markers and a pack of thick colored pencils covers everything from four to eight. Add a sheet of card to slip behind pages, and you are set.

All three work on the thick outlines in Cozy Cafe Animals and the other Doodle Pop Press books, so let your child pick.

Questions parents ask

Do markers bleed through coloring book pages?
They can, especially on standard paper. Put a sheet of card or spare paper behind the page you are coloring to protect the picture underneath.
What is easiest for a 4 year old to color with?
Chunky crayons and washable markers. Both are easy to hold, and markers give bright color without pressing hard.
Are gel pens good for kids coloring books?
They are fun for older kids adding small details, but they smudge easily and can soak through. Keep them for the finishing touches.
