Seven Ways to Make Coloring Time Last Longer

The easiest way to make coloring last longer is to join in. Sit down with your own page, talk about the picture, and let the activity grow from there. A few small ideas can turn ten minutes into a whole rainy afternoon.

None of these need anything beyond the book and a box of colors.

Color side by side

Children color for longer when someone colors next to them. Take a page of your own, or share one picture and split it: you do the sky, they do the castle.

Tell the story of the picture

Ask who lives there, what they are about to do, or what the weather is like. A unicorn becomes a character with a name. The coloring often follows the story: storm clouds, a sunset, a party.

Read a fact out loud

If the book has facts or captions, read one before starting. It gives the picture a reason to exist and something to chat about while the colors go on. Every page of Big Bold Dinos has one ready.

Add the background

Once the main picture is done, invite them to draw what is around it: grass, stars, a friend, a house. Older kids especially love making the page their own.

Make a gallery

Tape finished pages to a wall or the fridge, with a title and the artist’s name. Being "in the gallery" is a big motivator for the next picture.

Turn pages into presents

A colored page makes a lovely card for a grandparent, a birthday or a thank you. Cut it out, fold some card around it, and post it.

Leave the book out

A coloring book on the kitchen table with the crayons beside it gets used far more than one on a shelf. Make it easy to sit down and start.

Questions parents ask

How long do kids usually color for?
It varies a lot. Ten to twenty minutes is common for four and five year olds. Coloring alongside them, or adding a story, often makes it last longer.
Should I help my child color inside the lines?
There is no need to correct them. Bold outlines give a natural edge to aim for, and control comes with practice and age.
